Artificial Sports Turf

The correct choice of artificial surface depends on the type of sport to be played and the level at which it is to be played. Prestige looks at your individual requirements and, in consultation with our artificial turf consultants, matches them to our most appropriate surface.

Below is the Sport England guide to categories of artificial grass pitches which will give you a good indication of which surface will best suit your requirements.

The FA recommends long pile where 75% or more use is for football. Long pile can accommodate the use of studded football boots - plastic or moulded only, NOT aluminium which can become sharp and damage the surface

Tarmac: Tarmac is a multi-use, porous surface that can be used as an economical alternative to sand-filled, sand-dressed and polymeric surfaces.

Sand-filled: 19-25mm pile height supported by sand to 100% of pile height.

Sand-dressed: 16-20mm pile height supported by sand to 80% of pile height.

3rd generation (rubber crumb): 3G surfaces come in pile heights from 40mm-60mm. They are laid over a dynamic (stone) or engineered (stone and tarmac) base with a 10-25mm shockpad if required. Used most commonly for football, hockey and rugby.

Polymeric: Polymeric pitches use a porous resin and rubber granule mix 12-20mm thick and colour coated. It is applied in situ and provides a durable, shock absorbing surface for sports such as tennis, althetics and netball.

The shock pad is an elastic layer of expanded polyethylene, 10-25mm thick, which sits between the grass surface and the underlying sub base (see construction process). It avoids the surface consolidating so quickly and becoming harder, thereby adding to the dynamic performance of the pitch.
